No this is not a vocabulary lesson.
About two weeks ago I when I got my hair done, Jennifer (my hairstylist extraordinaire) asked me if I'd had any more problems with my passing out ... I was pleased to inform her that I hadn't had another episode since I went to the hospital over a year and a half ago to take the 'tilt table test' that my cardiologist recommended for me after a few passing out incidents. Maybe that conversation crept into my subconscious and my body remembered what an odd sensation passing out is ... because ...
I met with my trainer, Michael, at the gym this morning at 6:30. We did a few sets of walking lunges and then went to the squat machine. I did my first set of 20, got a drink, and did a second set of 20. When I finished, I felt a little weird - as in lightheaded. I stood there while he talked to me and asked if I was ok. I couldn't really say anything, so he said 'put your arms around me' so I did - and then I told him I think I needed to lay down. Well the next thing I know, he is talking to me and I am laying on the gym floor with towels under my head. WHAT?!? He said something about my legs giving out and I was completely gone. Then I realized that it had happened again. I passed out. He told me not to move, that the paramedics were on their way. Crap, not this again. I was not about to be taken out on a stretcher to the emergency room again (ok its only happened once, about 3 years ago, but still - once is more than enough for my lifetime)! He said they had to call 911 since I'd passed out (for liability purposes) - so we sat there and waited.
They came - all of them - I think there were 2 paramedics actually working on me - one taking my blood pressure and pulse, and one hooking up the portable EKG, and others who were looking and waiting - to see if they should use the defibrillator and the stretcher that they brought in. Unfortunately (or fortunately probably), the one hot paramedic was part of the Fire squad, who was obviously not needed, so he left after they realized that I was ok. Then another girl pricked my finger for a glucose test while someone else took my blood pressure again as I sat up. Vitals were fine, my color was back, and I felt ok, all things considered. All but one of the paramedics left, and he had to get some information from me and I had to sign something saying that I had refused service to the hospital. He told me that he didn't want me driving, and that I couldn't leave until I had another liter of water and some food in me. Then they left and I went with Michael from the middle of the mat into one of the offices, so that I wasn't as much on display as I had been!
Michael walked over to 7-11 and had one of the other trainers come sit with me to keep me company while he was gone. He told me he wasn't sure what had happened - that he just saw Michael holding me, so he thought he was giving me a hug (he does that) and then he said it just kept going for like 15 seconds, so he thought that maybe I was crying or something, and then he saw him helping me to the floor. I am sure that was quite the sight to see! Luckily mostly everyone else there was in their own working out zone, so I hope I didn't cause too much of a scene! Then Michael came back, slapped down a granola bar, a banana, and some orange juice and said 'start eating kid!' So we sat there and talked for awhile while I ate and he told me more details about what had happened ...
Apparently I was holding onto him pretty tightly and he was talking to me and I wasn't really responding after I told him I thought I should lay down. Then he said my hand started shaking and my eyes rolled back into my head - and he said that I was as white as he has ever seen. Then he said that all of a sudden, the tight grip that I had vanished as my legs gave out and I went totally limp. That's when he helped me to the floor. Luckily I was already holding onto him when it happened - otherwise there could have been some serious damage done! He said that he's seen a lot of people passing out (he's a trainer, played football, was in the Army, and has lots of good drinking stories) and this was the worst he has seen. Yikes, that makes me feel good. Not really a good thing ... he said I was out for two or three minutes - I don't think it was that long, because it always seems like longer than it really is, but what do I know, I was unconscious!
Nothing like starting off a week like that! I told Michael he is going to fire me as a client - two months ago I kicked him in the groin (accidentally of course ... swinging my leg up onto the leg press ... aaahhh!!), last week I slept through my alarm and stood him up (after being sick for a week and missing training sessions for that), and now when I finally do show up, I pass out on him!! Now if that's not the ideal personal training client, I don't know what is ;)
So now its back to the drawing board to figure out what is wrong with me. I left a message at my cardiologist's office this morning so we'll see what they have to say. It could very well be a combination of exhaustion from a weekend with kids, possible dehydration (since surely I wasn't drinking enough water in the last few days), and this time change throwing my body off since it was really like 5 when I got up this morning rather than 6, even though I did get 8 hours of sleep last night ... unfortunately rationalization isn't going to make what happened any different though! I passed out at the gym, again. I wonder if there is some kind of world record I should be pursuing for this ...
