In and Around Cooperstown

Other than the Baseball Hall of Fame, there really isn't a whole lot in Cooperstown. In fact, by 6pm, the entire town shuts down. You think I'm kidding?! Trust me on this one.

After we left the Hall of Fame, we ate lunch at The Home Plate. Hamburgers and chili cheese fries never tasted so good! Then we did what every tourist must do - shopped at the cheesy gift shops along Main Street. And what did we end up leaving with? Yup, matching t-shirts. We'd joked before the weekend that we needed to have shirts, so when Jenny found THE shirt, we had to get it. Sharyn wasn't on board until the three of us had purchased our shirts - and were on the way out the door - when the owner of the shop said (rather loudly) that he couldn't believe we were letting her out without one. He gave her enough grief, along with my pulling out the "its my birthday" card, and she finally caved and bought one too. That made the owner's day and he thought we were hilarious. He also told me that I was the "dream girl" after Katie told him about my baseball quest. Too bad the only ones that seem to think that are already married and 25+ years too old for me! (ha ha)

Souvenier bags in hand, we walked down to the lake to check it out. We got a sneak peak of some of the pumpkins that would be used in the morning for the races ...
We walked around the lake and enjoyed the beautiful Fall weather. It really was gorgeous. This is one of the things I love most about living on the East coast. The Fall is absolutely stunning. We walked back to our B&B and tried to come up with a good game plan for the night. We weren't too thrilled about the idea of hitting up the few bars "in town" so we finally decided that we would drive back to a little place we spotted on our way in earlier ... more to come on that!

After we returned, the woman at the B&B was shocked that we were back to early (it was like 9:30) and told us that she thought for sure we'd be the last ones in, and kept telling us that we should go get a drink or two. Um, sorry, we don't drink. We decided that the best way to spend our night was to get in our pj's and crowd around my little dvd player in our room and watch "Fever Pitch." That movie cracks me up - and it was a perfect way to end the day!

One of the great things about our B&B was that we had bunk beds. Seriously. I claimed the top bunk since I don't move when I sleep, and don't have to worry about falling out. Apparently my telling that to our hosts wasn't enough reassurance for them, because they brought in the guard rail. I felt like a 2 year old in a crib! And yes, that is the ceiling right above my head.Apparently people in Cooperstown don't get out much - because they were shocked that we drive EIGHT MILES that night! What else were we going to do?! We got up on Sunday morning and dressed for church, and that really threw them for a loop when we told them we were going to church all the way in Oneanta (about a half hour away).

We ate one of the best breakfasts I've ever had that morning. French toast, homemade donuts, this amazing quiche/egg souffle, fruit, cinnamon rolls, bacon, potatoes, orange juice, scones, you name it - it was probably there. And then we were off. But not before I checked out and the husband sent me with a plate of goodies "so his wife wouldn't yell at him" and him asking if we were Mormons. I told him yes, and he said that they "get a lot of us from out West" - stopping through Cooperstown on their way to/from Palymra, which is about 3 hours away. Then he apologized and couldn't believe that his wife had been trying to get us to drink the night before. Too funny. The drive to church was on some back roads and was again - stunning. I don't think I will ever cease to be enchanted by the Fall palette of colors in the trees. Every shade imaginable of reds, greens, yellows, oranges, and browns. Pictures don't do it justice, and it was raining anyway, so we didn't take any. But every few minutes or so, one of us would say something about how beautiful it was. I can't wait for those exquisite Fall colors to make it down to Virginia!
