[YES, I am still alive. I know I haven't posted in over a month ... I have a number of items and pictures waiting to be posted but I just haven't had two seconds to do it yet. Because this post a) just happened, b) doesn't require any pictures to be uploaded and resized and c) makes me laugh, it seems a bit more manageable!]
After the blow dryer incident, I tried emailing pictures and a description of what had happened to Conair. The email was kicked back undeliverable. I tried another address, and the same thing happened. So the next morning I called them, and asked the woman what email address I could send something to, and she asked what I was trying to send. I explained to her what had happened and she was freaking out. Then she proceeded to write up a faulty device report to give to her supervisor. She told me said not to throw my old one away until I hear anything from their Corporate headquarters in the next few days.
Well about a week went by and I hadn't heard anything, until I received a letter in the mail, informing me that they were sorry to hear about my recent incident, and requested me filling out a questionnaire explaining what had happened. I proceeded to complete the questions, and sent it, along with my old blow dryer, using the postage-paid sticker they provided me with, back to them. I also included pictures and the following letter:

Dear Pam,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the incident I had with my hair dryer. Please find below a description of the incident, as well as the consequences of it all.
On Monday, September 24, 2007 while I was blow drying my hair (no different than any other day of my life for the last 25+ years), all of a sudden, I heard a loud pop, then smelled smoke (or something burning), and felt the back of my head all of a sudden getting very hot and quite possibly burning. I turned off my blow dryer, and started rubbing my head to figure out what was going on. I pulled my hand out of my hair … along with a chunk of my hair! My head was still burning, so I felt back there again and discovered, when I pulled my hand out again, that there was a little spring, one of the hot coils from my blow dryer stuck to my head. The coil had snapped and singed itself to my head, burning my hair and scalp. The smell wasn't just burning blow dryer - it was my burned hair! Gross. It stung all day. Quite a chunk of hair came out in my fingers. I didn’t look until later that night (after going to work and feeling the stinging all day) to see what damage had been done. I moved the other hair out of the way and discovered a red burn on the back of my scalp. No wonder it hurt – I had been seriously burned by my blow dryer.
This was about a week and a half ago now, and the damage is still clearly there. I have showed it to a number of people, who have all been shocked at the size and severity of the burn. The burn has since scabbed over, and the scab consequently came off when I had my hair done (cut and colored) last week and the girl who washed it combed through it afterward, and her comb snagged on the back of my head and caught on the scab, pulling it loose. My hairstylist said the damage looks like a cigarette burn. Luckily, the hair is starting to grow back on that part of my head, so it didn’t damage the follicles, but it will be an interesting battle to keep that portion of my now miniscule in length hair from sticking out underneath the rest of my hair. She said I’ll probably have to buy small bobby pins to pin it down when it does grow long enough to maneuver.
Who knew that a blow dryer could cause such a hazard??
Included are the following pictures:
My blow dryer, after the incident (notice the missing springs on the right side of the dryer).
Hair that came out (notice the black burned dots on the ends that were once attached to my scalp), and remnants of the broken springs.
Day 1 of the burn.
Day 3 after the burn.
Day 6 after the burn.
Day 9 after the burn – showing the scab that had been snagged loose.
Day 9 after the burn – showing the burn after the scab came off.
I will continue to document the damage sustained on my head, through the various stages of regrowth. I would be happy to send you these picures, if desired.
Please contact me as soon as possible after reviewing my incident so we can come to a settlement conclusion. Thank you very much for your time.
As you can see from the date on the letter, this was over a month ago. I hadn't heard anything back from them and just yesterday thought that I should either call or write to them again. I came home for lunch today and found the following letter from Conair in the mailbox ...

Interesting. Very interesting. So now everyone is telling me what they think I should do ... take it and be done, ask for more money, threaten to sue, actually sue, etc. etc. etc. What do you think? I'm not a malicious person thinking that I'm going to have the next "I'm suing McDonald's because my coffee was too hot" case, but I do think its a bit odd that they're willing to just pay me off to keep my mouth shut. Personally, I find the whole situation very amusing ... and definitely, most definitely blog-worthy ;)

When we were in
I don't know how she did it, but she found one and ordered it for me. Basically, its a display case shaped like home plate, with shelves and places for baseballs. They had embroidered baseballs in it, which is my next task - to fill it with all the balls of the stadiums (teams) I have visited. I'm so excited!
Sharyn gave me a couple baseballs to start my collection - and amazingly enough she hadn't even coordinated with Jenny on this present, yet they went perfectly hand in hand together. I'm so excited for my new fun present!
It only had one candle - so I didn't have a problem blowing it out. Until I realized that it was one of those trick candles. I blew it out twice and then smothered it with my fingers so it wouldn't keep re-lighting itself! It even had edible flowers on top ...
You can kind of see to the left of this picture the inflatable sombrero drink holder that we had ... I am sad we didn't take a picture of it because it was great!

And now ... for the party in pictures, thanks to Katie for putting my camera to good use:
Megan and Ben eating cookies that Sharyn brought.
Dave, Megan, & Mark chilling on the couch, probably laughing at something Megan just said because she is hilarious.
Liz trying to pretend she doesn't know Mike is stuffing his face full of a burrito.
Michelle, Darci, Dave, & Cubbie pretending to like each other (ha ha).
Neal, Becky, & Lisa full from dinner, waiting for dessert.
Tyler & Taylor ... I am not exactly sure what they're doing, and I'm not exactly sure I want to know.
Tess & me posing cute for Katie taking the picture.
Seabreeze, Roshelle, & Tess happy as always.
Dean, Sharyn, me, & Katie hovering by the food table.
Then Brandi Carlile was on stage. She was awesome! She played for almost 2 hours. I didn't think it would last nearly that long - and her encore set was almost as long as her first one! She did most of her popular songs and then in the encore did some fun stuff, like Johnny Cash, and a really cool unplugged song. It was a great night, despite standing in 4 inch heels the whole time (my only hope of being able to see anything on stage!!) and trying not to notice all the PDA going on around us...
The DC United took on the Guadalajara Chivas. We certainly felt like minorities amongst all the Mexicans (and all of them drunk to boot - I have never seen so many empty cans of beer and broken bottles on the way INTO the game as I did tonight). I think I was the only one who didn't understand Espanol in the whole stadium! ha ha
It was a good way for me to branch into a new sport now that the baseball season is coming to a close (and because my team will not be in the playoffs this year) ... at a stadium that I am already familiar with ;) I haven't been to a soccer game since the many Friday nights we spent at BYU's field in college ... good times those were!
Then we went to one of my favorite restaurants in Georgetown, a little Italian place called
Then we drove downtown and walked by the Vietnam Wall and over to the Lincoln Memorial just as the sun was going down.
As many times as I have been downtown to see the monuments, I never get sick of them. They are always just as stunning as the first time I saw them. I love looking at them at night especially. Of course sometimes you just need to sit down and take a break from all that walking ...

The evidence of the spontaneous combustion of my blow dryer --
You probably can't see since the picture is small, but on the ends of my hair (where it was in my scalp just moments before), there are little black balls where it was singed together. There are also a few pieces of the coils - the biggest one was the one that managed to stick itself in my head.
Yup, that's right ... an entire spot singed hair-less by a disfunctional hair dryer. Who would have thought drying your hair could be so hazardous?? Luckily for me, it is underneath quite a bit of hair, so no one can see it.
Rest assured - I went to Costco on my lunch break today and picked this up:

I dutifully put my ear plugs in before it was my turn, then put on my bright yellow swim cap (each wave was given a specific color swim cap to wear), fastened my goggles securely on my face, and waited for the fog horn to sound our start. And we're off ... we swam out to a buoy (about 50 yards out) and then turned north where we swam 1/2 mile up the shoreline and then swam back into the beach. I was already tired by the time we got to the first buoy. ha ha It was certainly different swimming in the ocean than it is swimming laps in a pool! I knew it would be, but I don't think I anticipated it being as difficult as it was. We were out a bit, so we didn't have as many waves to deal with, but you are still bobbing up and down and drifting around, the water isn't very clear, salt water is going down your throat, people are banging into you, etc ... but I did it. There was a girl who was swimming next to me and she and I kind of kept each other in check (and by that I mean we kept running into each other) until the end.
All in all, the Dewey Beach Triathlon was a success. It was a very fun short race to do, and we all had a good time. The weather worked into our favor, since the rain stopped just in time, it was overcast, and not very hot at all. I am definitely glad that I did it - at first I said that I needed to do another triathlon just to prove to myself that I could do it barring all the issues I had last time - but now that I've done one "for real" I think this is something that I want to keep doing. I would love to really train for and do an Olympic one next year - that will take a LOT of training (1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, and 10k run) so we'll see if that happens. But even if I just keep doing the sprint triathlons, its a fun thing to do - especially when you have good friends to do it with - and it keeps some variety in your training.
Now I feel much more confident telling people that I have done a triathlon now since I kind of view the last one as trial run ;) Dewey Beach Triathlon, check!
I'd heard about the roller coaster in the middle of the mall. Knowing that I don't have the strongest stomach when it comes to roller coasters, I was prepared with my leftover dramamine from skydiving. So as soon as we walked into the mall, I dutifully popped 2 into my mouth at the drinking fountatin. We'd decided to go on the roller coaster before eating lunch, for obvious reasons. I'd pictured in my head what I thought this roller coaster would be like, but I was not prepared for real thing - not actually one roller coaster, but an entire amusement park inside of the mall. Wow. Now I'm not the biggest proponent of amusement parks, but we were there, and I'd decided that I would go on the roller coaster - that now meant we had to choose which roller coaster we wanted to go on. We chose the Pepsi Ripsaw Roller Coaster because its the one that goes all the way around the park, and we got a good view of everything else at the same time.
Granted it wasn't the fastest or scariest one in the park (just the sight of those that tear from left to right, up and down and in circles makes me sick!), but we went on it anyway. I think the next oldest person on it was 12. ha ha There was one time that I actually felt kind of that roller coaster feeling, but for the most part, it was very tame. Roller coaster, check.
Off to lunch. We decided to eat at a little Italian restaurant called Tucci Benucch. It was delicious. We shared entrees so we could try it all. I drank like 4 glasses of water. I had a slight headache but didn't think much of it. Oh yes, and as the waiter came to our table, I spilled my glass of water all over the table ... nice. Never a dull moment ... and that wasn't the only one, unfortunately for me.
I got a lot of funny looks as we wheeled through the mall, and after a half hour or so, we headed back to the car so I could lay down - enter the glory of the minivan. I could sprawl out over the whole backseat with plenty of room - and continue reading the book that I'd started on the airplane and was now completely engrossed in (more on that later). So much for going to the Minnesota State Fair that we'd wanted to check out ... oh well, we'll never know what we missed out on!
The game was fine - kind of boring as far as baseball games are concerned, and the Metrodome certainly leaves something to be desired. I think that's why they're opening a new stadium in Minneapolis in 2010 (which can be my next attempt at the Mall of America, this time wheelchair-less). The game was uneventful, which I guess can be a good thing. We were definitely glad that we started in Minneapolis and didn't end there - it would have been quite the anti-climatic ending for the baseball trip!
But all in all, we had a good time, and its all part of the goal - Minneapolis Metrodome, check!
the Mousehouse Cheesehouse. ha ha ... not much more than a fancy gift shop with expensive cheese, but we had to check it out. We did have fun laughing at all the names of some of the shops … “Curds and Whey,” a “Cheese Castle,” etc.
Onward we drove, to Milwaukee. We checked into the hotel, and then headed to Miller Park. It was awesome.
When we were walking in, I even noticed the slide at the stadium (which turned out to be kind of name, and only for the mascot to slide from one level down to the next). It was beautiful outside and in though.
They played the Pirates, and the Brewers easily won the game. We had great seats there, and enjoyed the play – both on and off the field.
As for the not-so-lucky fan in front of us, he was our unfortunate 'fan of the game' that I took a picture of ... enough said.
Some crazy drunk guys got kicked out of the game near the end. Its always funny to me when the fans are cheering louder for the security guards than the baseball players! Miller Park was fabulous though - I'd heard rave reviews about it, and was definitely not disappointed.
After the game, we went to a place called “Kopp’s Custard” – apparently a famous Milwaukee custard shop. It was very tasty! It brings a new meaning to the name of the custard shop by my hair salon here in VA – “Milwaukee Custard” ;)
